ROCORI Takes Down Mahtomedi In 2-1 Win


COLLEGEVILLE -- In a rematch of the 2018 Class 3A state championship game, ROCORI faced off against Mahtomedia on Saturday, May 21 at St. John's University in Collegeville.


The Spartans and Zephyrs put on a pitchers' duel in the nonconference showdown, with ROCORI coming away with the win 2-1.


The Spartans jumped out to a lead in the fifth inning, tallying one run in the bottom half of that frame while adding one more in the bottom of the sixth to take a 2-0 advantage into the seventh and final inning. Mahtomedia scored one run in the top of the seventh, but the Spartans shut down the Zephyrs the rest of the way to take the game by one run.


Brady Shafer led the way for ROCORI at the plate, finishing 1-for-2 with one RBI. Jack Spanier brought in the other run for the Spartans, while Joel Sowada, Beck Loesch and Thad Lieser each finishing with one hit for the Spartans.


On the mound, Cole Fuchs started the game and pitched the first four innings, giving up three hits, no runs and no walks while striking out five. Evan Acheson threw 2 1/3 innings in relief, giving up just one hit, one run and three walks with one strikeout. Tyler Lardy finished the game for ROCORI, pitching 2/3 of an inning while giving up no hits, no runs and no walks with two strikeouts.


With the win, the Spartans improve to 9-6 on the season and will finish up the regular season this week with four games at home at the Cold Spring Baseball Park.
