Late Rally Lifts Rocori Over Red Wing
COLD SPRING -- The Rocori Spartans baseball team stepped up when it mattered most to win in comeback fashion on Saturday afternoon.
Rocori, trailing 5-3 heading into the bottom of the sixth inning, scored six runs in the inning to complete a comeback and top Red Wing 9-5 in a nonconference game at the Cold Spring Baseball Park.
Before the comeback, the Spartans scored one run in each the first, third and fifth innings, before exploding for six runs in the sixth.
Rocori allowed Red Wing to have just one big inning, giving up four runs in the second inning and one run in the fourth inning. The Wingers out-hit the Spartans 12-6 in the game.
The Spartans were led in the game by Sam Young, who finished 2-for-2 with one run scored and two RBI. Nick Penick went 1-for-4 with one run scored and two RBI, Mason Primus scored one run and drove in two, and Dylan Tebrake and Matt Waletzko each had one RBI in the game.
Connor Schoborg got the win on the mound for Rocori, pitching 4 2/3 innings. He gave up eight hits, five runs (three earned), two walks and struck out one. Eli Backes pitched 2 1/3 innings in relief, giving up four hits, no runs, no walks and striking out two.
Brodie Smith and Teddy Tauer each went 2-for-4 with one RBI to lead the way for Red Wing. Tauer took the loss on the mound, pitching 5 2/3 innings. He gave up four hits, five runs (four earned), four walks and struck out four.
Before the game on Saturday, Rocori honored its 1992 baseball state championship team. That state title was the first state title in program history, with the second title coming in 2010.
With the win, Rocori improves to 4-5 on the season. Since the game was a nonconference matchup, Rocori remains at 3-5 in the CLC so far this year.
Next up for the Spartans is a Central Lakes Conference doubleheader against the Sartell Sabres on Tuesday, May 9 in Sartell. The first game will begin at 4 p.m., with the second game following shortly after.
