Spartans Split Weekend Series
The ROCORI Spartans baseball team split a two-game series over the weekend against nonconference opponents that took place on Friday and Saturday.
On Friday (May 3), the Spartans took on Fridley at Fridley High School in the first game of the two-game series. In that game, ROCORI came away with a 7-1 victory.
In the win, the Spartans jumped out to an early lead in the game, scoring one run in the top of the first inning, two runs in the top of the third and one more in the top of the fourth to take a 4-0 lead over the Tigers.
ROCORI went on to tack on one run in the top of the sixth inning and two more in the top of the seventh to take the game.
Jack Steil led the way at the plate in the win, going 1-for-3 with a home run, two runs scored and one RBI. Brady Klehr went 2-for-3 with one RBI and Carter Schmitz finished 1-for-2 with one RBI.
Steil also earned a complete-game victory on the mound, giving up just two hits, no earned runs, one walk and striking out 14 in seven innings of work.
On Saturday (May 4), ROCORI rounded out the two-game nonconference series against Simley in Inver Grove Heights.
The Spartans ultimately fell in the game 6-4 to split the pair of games.
Nolan Notch went 2-for-3 with one RBI and DJ Kron went 1-for-2 with one RBI to lead ROCORI at the plate in the game. Brady Klehr, Brady Linn, Carter Schmitz and Brett Sowada each added one hit.
Blake Miller started the game on the mound for the Spartans, pitching two innings. Rudy Notch and Brady Linn pitched two innings each in relief, both giving up no earned runs on the hill.
With the split of the two-game series, ROCORI moves to 3-4 overall on the season. Next up for the Spartans is a matchup against Central Lakes Conference opponent Sartell at 5 p.m. Monday (May 6) at the Cold Spring Baseball Park.
